Akwantu: The Journey

On June 11, 2015 in front of an appreciative and highly responsive audience (standing room only) director Roy T. Anderson presented his film Akwantu: The Journey, which documents the struggle for freedom of the Maroons of Jamaica who formed communities in some of the most inhospitable regions of the island.

Shot in Jamaica, Ghana, Canada and the United States over the course of two years, the film features interviews with renowned scholars, Maroon officials and present-day Jamaican residents and weaves Roy’s ancestral personal journey from Ghana to the Accompong Maroon society.
